Rise and shine, Good morning Clairview.
Up at sparrows and pack down the camper. This is like a crossfit WOD as we systematically fold everything down and pack it all away in the morning sun so that everything fits neatly away. We were on the road by 9am and headed to Rockhampton.
The last few days have been very hot and we have realised we need better sun protection. Off to Rays Outdoors in Rocky for some wide brim hats and long sleeve shirts. Stella got hammered by mozzie bites so we need to protect her better from this.
The day quickly slips away when you are travelling and shopping and ideally we would've like to have been in Emu Park by 3pm. By this stage it was 4pm and we were still in Rocky. We have realised by now that we need minimum 2 hours set up and have Stellas dinner ready by 530pm. This wasn't going to happen if we attempt the drive to Emu Park/Yeppoon so we decided on a little van park in Gracemere. We did a quick set up without worrying about the tarp under the shade of some trees and hit the BabyQ up for some steak and mash. Early to bed tonight and off to Yeppoon or Emu Park the following day.
Rain. We didn't have the tarp up and left a few things outside thinking it would be ok. Zane woke up around 3am to the sound of light rain. Quick, out of bed and out into the rain to gather up a few important things and put them into the tent. Then the rain stopped. Not much rain at all. The birds were very vocal in Gracemere and we were all up and ready for brekky at 6am. Packed up we hit the road and discussed caravan park options for Yeppoon. We decided on the Island View at Kinka Beach. Having previously read their website and the good reviews on the WikiCamps app this was to be us for minimum 3 nights.
We were given the only unpowered site at the camp and it was in a far corner, shaded and near the amenities, perfect. A lovely couple came to greet us as we started unpacking and helped with the tarp. Steve and Lisa from Gympie. Steve was a war vet who had been shot in the leg, had his toes blown off and fell out of a helicopter.
That Friday night we had a great night with the owners and locals in the van park. They had a sausage sizzle, Jag the Joker and meat tray raffles. We won the Pork meat tray! The owners of the park are a very genuine, happy family and love their work. Stella had a great time playing with the grandkids.
Every afternoon Ron the owner releases the chooks to roam the park and Stella loved chasing them around. Ron said he even named one of the new chooks Stella after meeting her the previous night!
We dropped into the info centre and had a look at the marvellous Keppel Bay shell club founded by Stella McKay. Zane went for a paddle in the Yeppoon Causeway Lake and we went on a family hike to Limestone National Park. On the Sunday we checked out the Emu Park markets and went to the beach for a play and a swim. Janelle has been practicing her photography skills and Zane and Stella have been riding the mountain bike every afternoon.
It has been a full on first week and we are looking forward to having a lazy sit around and do nothing day after we leave Kinka Beach, maybe try a free camp and have some down time.
Ciao.
